EL MÍTIC INVENTOR
Gràcies a les narracions d'Ovidi i Apol·lodor sabem que va existir Dèdal, un presitgiós arquitecte atenenc que era alhora inventor, escultor i constructor. A l'illa de Creta va servir a les ordres del rei Minos i va tenir el fill que ha passat a la història amb ell, Ícar.
A Creta, Dèdal va construir un artefacte a instàncies de Pasífae, esposa del rei, gràcies al qual ella va poder tenir relacions amb un bell toro, i d'aquesta unió va nèixer el Minotaure. Posteriorment va haver de dissenyar el laberint, per recloure-hi el monstre antropòfag, meitat home, meitat brau.
El rei Minos, espòs de Pasífae, va decidir castigar Dèdal, i el va tancar, juntament amb el seu fill Ícar, al laberint. Però l'inventor va buscar la manera de fugir volant: va contruir unes ales amb plomes d'ocell unides amb cera. Abans d'emprendre el vol, Dèdal va avisar Ícar que no havia de volar ni massa avall, ja que la humitat del mar impediria el vol, ni massa amunt, ja que l'escalfor del sol fondria la cera. Però Ícar, embriagat per la llibertat que li donava el fet de volar, es va acostar massa al Sol, la cera es va fondre, les ales es van desfer i va caure al mar. Dèdal va aconseguir salvar-se, i després d'enterrar el seu fill en una illa que va rebre el nom d'Icària, va viure a Sícilia fins que va morir.
